Today, Minister for Defence Materiel and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, visited RAAF Base Richmond with local Member for Macquarie, Louise Markus MP.

“I’m please to have had the opportunity to visit RAAF Base Richmond with the Member for Macquarie, Louise Markus,” Minister Tehan said.

“This is my first visit to RAAF Base Richmond and it has been a terrific opportunity to meet Australian Defence Force personnel in the Air Mobility Group and see up close one of our latest acquisitions, the C-27J Spartan which arrived in Australia last year.

“Acquisition of these aircraft is a significant investment in Australia’s airlift capability, improving our Defence Force’s ability to move troops, equipment and supplies.

“Speaking with members of the Air Mobility Group about the wide range of air operations they conduct, I continue to be highly impressed by the capability and professionalism of our defence personnel.”

“It’s great to have Minister Tehan here in the electorate of Macquarie today. RAAF Base Richmond is home to approximately 2500 defence personnel who are an important part of our local community,” Ms Markus said.

“The Defence personnel at RAAF Richmond make an outstanding contribution and can be truly proud of their achievements.”

Ten C-27J Spartan aircraft will replace the Caribou aircraft, which was retired from service in 2009 after more than four decades of service. These aircraft will initially be based at RAAF Base Richmond until their permanent home at RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland is completed. RAAF Base Richmond is home to Australia's fleet of C-130 Hercules and Headquarters Air Mobility Group, which is responsible for the Australian Defence Force's air mobility aircraft.
