I congratulate Donald Trump on becoming the United States President-elect.

The Australia-United States Alliance has been through changes of government on both sides of the Pacific over the past 65 years and has continued to strengthen and grow.

I would like to acknowledge the strong relationship that I have developed with US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and I look forward to continuing the relationship through the transition period and with the new administration.

As outlined in the 2016 Defence White Paper, the US continues to be Australia’s most important strategic partner through our long-standing Alliance. For the past 70 years, the strong presence of the United States has underpinned the stability of our region.

As we have for 100 years, Australian and United States forces are working side-by-side, including in the Middle East, to counter shared threats and to support global stability.

I look forward to working with the current United States administration and the new Trump administration following inauguration in pursuit of our common interests and shared goals.
