The Turnbull Government will deliver one of the world’s most advanced anti-submarine warfare frigates, create 4000 Australian jobs and secure a local naval shipbuilding industry for decades to come.  The frigates, to be designed by BAE Systems and built by ASC Shipbuilding, are central to our plan to secure our nation, our naval shipbuilding sovereignty and create Australian jobs.

The Government will recommend to the Governor-General a number of command changes to the Australian Defence Force.Following confirmation, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell  AO, DSC will be appointed Chief of the Defence Force when Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC completes his tenure in July.Lt Gen Campbell joined the ADF in 1981 and has demonstrated outstanding leadership during his time as Chief of Army. His guidance will be instrumental as Australia modernises its military capabilities and continues its operations both in our region and around the globe.

Australia has reinforced its support for the vital work of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) by signing a Technical Agreement in Canberra today. Director General of the OPCW, Fernando Arias, and Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Tanya Monro AC, signed the agreement as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the re-emergence of chemical weapons.

Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester and Senator for the ACT the Hon Zed Seselja, today announced the Government will be relocating Defence Housing Australia (DHA) from its head office in Barton to the town centre of Gungahlin, meeting the Federal Government’s 2016 election commitment. DHA has been selected on the basis that it is the right sized agency, has clients in the region and has leases expiring in the near future.

The Turnbull Government today announced it will establish a Maritime Technical College to identify, train or retrain Australian workers for our $90 billion shipbuilding program. The Government will invest an initial $25 million into the college which will be based in Adelaide but will deliver world class training across the country in key areas such as steel fabrication, welding and naval engineering.

The Defence Ministers of Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their nations' continued commitment to the FPDA, and commended the FPDA’s achievements over the 46 years since its founding in 1971.
