Today, on Ukraine’s Independence Day, our thoughts are with all Ukrainians, and the Australian-Ukrainian community.
This day carries special importance to all Ukrainians, not only commemorating independence from the former Soviet Union but also marking 18 months since the beginning of Russia’s immoral and illegal invasion.
Australia recognises the bravery, resilience and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people defending their homeland from Russian brutality.
Ukrainian independence means so much for the world. Not only is Ukraine fighting for its sovereignty, it is also fighting for us all, defending the international rules-based order and its underpinning principles.
On this important day, I reaffirm that Australia will support Ukraine for as long as it takes to resolve this conflict on its own terms. Australia and our partners will not waver. Like Ukraine, we remain confident that brighter days are ahead.
