This advanced turret will be produced in Australia for export and potential applications with the Australian Defence Force. Joint media release Member for Lyne, The Hon David Gillespie Defence is partnering with Australian companies to strengthen maritime research skills by delivering a new regional Australia-built defence science research vessel. R/V Ginan, a 12m vessel, is part of a $1.8 million project to support Defence’s maritime research.  The boat was constructed by a local Australian boat builder, Steber International, based at Taree, NSW.

This is the 16th edition of the Air Show, and we are really excited. For me, it's my world's colliding – it's where I'm both Minister for Defence but also the local member. And from the perspective of Defence, this is a really significant event. As Justin said, there will be 900 exhibitors, which is the biggest gathering in relation to air power trade shows. What happens in combination with the Air Show, though, is also the Chief of Air Force Symposium, that will be occurring on Monday. It will be hosted by our Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Steve Chappell.

Australians are encouraged to help protect the nation’s cybersecurity future, as the Australian Cyber and Security Centre (ACSC) – a key part of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) - launches its third annual Cyber Threat Report. Australian businesses and organisations will be given the opportunity to have their say about the workforce challenges and skills-related barriers affecting their contribution to the modernisation of Australian Defence Force capabilities. Today’s launch and formal naming of the third and final Air Warfare Destroyer, Sydney, showcases the success of the AWD Program. The milestone marks a 60 per cent productivity improvement from the first ship to the third ship since the implementation of the Government-led reform initiative. WA’s RAAF Base Gingin will receive $7.7 million for maintenance works to its airfield, supporting Australian Defence Force (ADF) capability while maximising opportunities for local businesses.   Fulton Hogan Industries Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to undertake aircraft pavement and aeronautical ground lighting works at the military airfield. The construction workforce is predicted to peak at about 80 personnel per day, creating a range of opportunities for local businesses.

New export opportunities will open up for Australian defence industry businesses, with Leidos joining the Global Supply Chain (GSC) Program as its newest prime contractor. Managed by the Centre for Defence Industry Capability, the GSC Program contracts defence prime companies to identify opportunities for Australian small to medium enterprises (SMEs) within their supply chains. As a major systems integrator and services company, Leidos has a presence in more than 25 countries, relying heavily on its contractors to supply components and solutions.

The Department of Defence has worked in partnership with industry to develop ICT platforms to support a contemporary end user environment for Windows 10. Assistant Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon David Fawcett said Leidos delivered the new ICT platforms that will sustain Windows 10 and associated systems for Defence users on time and under budget. “The delivery of this platform enabled the End User Computing project to migrate over 100,000 Defence users from Windows XP to Windows 10,” Minister Fawcett said.

Defence has engaged Brisbane-based Australian industry supplier, L3-Micreo to manage the production, manufacture and delivery of more than 14,000 additional life-saving SILVERSHIELD units to the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces. SILVERSHIELD is a world class, vehicle-mounted force protection system produced by Defence under the REDWING program. Light could hold the key to reducing operational costs for Defence and protect ships and the environment from marine pest invaders. Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced Defence Science and Technology (DST) and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) are researching a novel approach of using ultra-violet (UV) light to protect particular sensitive areas on a ship’s hull from biofouling.
