Today I visited the 7th Brigade at Gallipoli Barracks, Brisbane.
This was an excellent opportunity to meet with the men and women of the 7th Brigade, who assisted the Murphy’s Creek and Grantham communities in the Lockyer Valley following the devastating floods earlier this year.
At the height of the flood, soldiers conducted rescue, recovery and clean-up missions in the affected areas, joined by reservists from the 11th Brigade. The assistance that these soldiers provided to the Lockyer Valley communities should be highly praised.
During my visit, I also met with senior members of staff and was briefed on the new Battle Management System being trialled by the Army.
As part of the brief, I was able to observe the operation of the system which is a key component for the Brigade in the lead up to the joint exercise between the United States and Australian Defence Forces, Exercise Talisman Sabre.
Last year, 7th Brigade personnel were deployed to Afghanistan, the Middle East and East Timor. Their efforts at home and abroad should be commended.
More than 1000 personnel from the Brigade were deployed to Afghanistan as part of Mentoring Task Force One where they were responsible for training and mentoring the Afghan National Army.
Around 400 personnel were deployed as part of the International Stabilisation Force, East Timor and the Brigade also provided personnel to the Security Detachment on Baghdad.
