Today I visited RAAF Base Amberley to tour the facilities and to personally thank the men and women of the RAAF who have been contributing to Defence operations.
During the visit I met with the men and women of Number 36 Squadron and also met personnel from Number 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron as well as Number 1 Airfield Operational Support Squadron.
This year Number 36 Squadron has provided support to Operations Flood Assist, Yasi Assist, Christchurch Assist and Pacific Assist. The squadron operates the C-17A Globemaster, which has played an integral role in providing heavy lift support and recently, transporting search and rescue personnel to Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
Throughout these operations Number 36 Squadron has also continued to provide support to Operation Slipper in a heavy lift capacity, including the movement of combat vehicles in and out of theatres of operation as well as large freight items.
I am confident that the Government’s purchase of an additional C-17A Globemaster from the United States will prove to be an excellent asset for the Squadron and their operations.
