Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, the Hon. Mike Kelly AM MP, today said that we should not underestimate the importance of lessons learned from recent peacekeeping operations and disaster responses in order to improve our response to tomorrow’s challenges, both in Australia and around the world.
Speaking at the official opening of the 8th International Lessons Learned Conference, being held in Sydney, 3?6 December 2012, Dr Kelly said the focus of the conference was on transitions and providing a dedicated forum for developing an understanding of civil-military best practice in conflict and disaster management.
“With the conference fully subscribed, more than 200 participants registered from more than 20 countries including Turkey, the United States, Sweden, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Jordan, African nations and Australia will hear from more than 40 speakers over three days,” Dr Kelly said.
“By identifying gaps between strategic direction and operational implementation and highlighting key civil-military priorities that can enhance performance in conflict and disaster interventions, operational planners will be much better positioned to develop response options to future conflicts and disaster response operations both in the Asia-Pacific region and further afield.”
Co-hosted by the Australian Defence Force’s Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) and the Australian Civil-Military Centre (ACMC), the conference brings together lessons learned practitioners from around the world.
This is the first time the conference has been held in Australia and, indeed, the southern hemisphere. The conference is held in a different country each year and provides a forum for discussion and debate about the issues that impact on the planning and conduct of operations including conflict, peacekeeping and disaster response missions.
