The Hon. Jason Clare MP
Minister for Defence Materiel.
The Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare and Member for Blair Shayne Neumann today officially opened Amberley District State School in Yamanto.
Recognising the importance of the school to the community and Defence families, the Department of Defence provided $26.8 million in funding to relocate the school to its new location in Yamanto.
“Amberley District State School has a long history with RAAF Base Amberley,” Mr Clare said.
“Almost one in three children at the school has one or both parents working in the Defence Forces.
“It is an honour to be here to officially open these new facilities.”
The new facilities include:
- Purpose built technology and music areas;
- New interactive whiteboards;
- 24 new classrooms; and
- A new library and school hall.
The school was seconded for use by the Air Force during World War II.
In 1981, the school was relocated so the school buildings could be used as a RAAF training facility, which is still used today.
The school moved again in 2009 to allow for the redevelopment of RAAF Base Amberley.
Member for Blair Shayne Neumann welcomed the new improved facilities at the school.
“Since moving to its new location in Yamanto, the number of enrolments at Amberley District State School has more than doubled,” Mr Neumann said.
“The relocation of the school and the new facilities are great for the local community.
The Department of Defence has also provided funding for two Defence School Transition Aides for Amberley District State School because of the high number of Defence families.
“It is tough for children when they are going to a new school. That is why the Department of Defence have provided two aides to help families and children adjust to the new school community,” Mr Clare said.
