The Hon. Jason Clare MP
Minister for Defence Materiel.
Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced more than $410,000 in Federal Government funding to support the training of up to 70 apprentices, tradespeople and staff at Forgacs shipyard in Newcastle.
Mr Clare made the announcement while visiting the shipyard with the Member for Newcastle, Sharon Grierson.
“Over the next decade, spending on Defence equipment here in Australia will increase in real terms from about $5.5 billion a year to about $7.5 billion,” Mr Clare said.
“This will create more demand for skilled workers.
“That’s why the Federal Government is supporting them to train apprentice boilermakers, machinists and electricians here at Forgacs.
“This grant will also go towards helping to develop the skills of other staff – as they work on important projects like the construction of the new Air Warfare Destroyers.”
Ms Grierson said that this was part of the Federal Government’s plan to develop the Australian defence industry.
“The team here at Forgacs are doing a great job – helping to build the equipment our Defence Force needs for the future,” Mr Clare said.
“To continue that work, they’ll need more skilled workers.
“It’s terrific that companies like Forgacs can take advantage of this assistance from the Federal Government to help build a more skilled workforce for the future.”
The grant is provided through the Federal Government’s Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry program which helps defence companies improve the skills of their workforce.
