Xstrata Copper’s Mt Isa mine has been named one of Australia’s most supportive employers of part time Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel.
Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, presented Xstrata Copper with a National Employer Support Award in a ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
“Employers who support part time ADF personnel successfully manage a highly skilled and disciplined workforce for the benefit of their employees, the company and the Australian community,” Senator Feeney said.
“Companies like Xstrata Copper build the skills of their employees, create strong community and business partnerships, and also support the security of our nation.”
Matt O’Neill is Infrastructure Manager with Xstrata Copper. He said they were delighted to receive the award, particularly as it was employee-nominated.
“Xstrata employs about a dozen Reservists in our Mt Isa operations. Our corporate values are very similar to those we see in Defence Reservists,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Honesty, dependability, courage and respect are a few that spring to mind. By working to these values Reservists are highly valued employees.”
Mr O’Neill said Mt Isa’s geographical isolation worked in favour of employing Reservists.
“In a location like this the diversity of experiences offered by joining, training and deploying with ADF Reserves helps with our ability to attract and retain people,” he said.
“Being a Reservist also improves the skills of these employees in a wide range of areas from operating equipment, problem solving through to communication and leadership.”
