Regional business leaders have thrown their support behind Australian Defence Force Reservists with the launch of the Illawarra Defence Reserves Support Committee in Wollongong last night.
Defence and the Illawarra Business Chamber have joined forces to establish the committee, which aims to provide advice and support to Reservists and employers, through social activities and information exchange.
Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Senator David Feeney said the formation of the committee was a positive move by the Illawarra region that would benefit both Reservists and businesses in the area.
“It’s fantastic to see the Illawarra Business Chamber showing community leadership in supporting the Australian Defence Force, its members and their families.
“This committee will help educate local businesses on both the benefits and responsibilities of having an employee who serves part-time in the ADF,” Senator Feeney said.
Illawarra Business Chamber CEO, Mike Halloran said the formation of the committee was a sign that businesses in the Illawarra were committed to supporting Defence Reserves and their families.
“Defence Reserves make a commitment to serve the nation while also forming an integral part of our local community as dedicated employees.
“Employing a Reservist can generate mutual benefits for both employer and employee and we, at the Illawarra Business Chamber, are committed to supporting our Reservists and their employers,” Mr Halloran said.
