Following the release of the Royal Commission’s Interim Report into Defence and Veterans Suicide, the Veterans Wellbeing Taskforce has been convened by new Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel, Matt Keogh.
In this first meeting under the Albanese Labor Government, State and Territory Ministers have had the opportunity to discuss their key priorities in supporting defence personnel, veterans and families.
The Taskforce also reviewed the Royal Commission’s Interim Report observations on how State and Territory Governments can make changes that would assist in improving the lives of defence personnel, veterans and families, with a view to reducing the tragedy that is the existing rate of suicide.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Matt Keogh said the taskforce agreed that their key objective is delivering a better future for veterans and families.
“We are committed to delivering practical support measures that will improve the welfare and wellbeing of all veterans and families, now and into the future, building on services currently available,” Minister Keogh said.
The Commonwealth, along with State and Territory Ministers are particularly focused on veteran employment outcomes, mental health support, veteran homelessness, and needs for additional services.
All Governments are committed to the opportunity of the Government’s commitment to new Veterans’ and Families’ Hubs, tailored to meet the needs of veteran communities where they are located.
“Veterans and families should have access to the supports they need, where and when they need it,” Minister Keogh said.
State and Territory Ministers also discussed the importance of supporting veterans’ employment as part of addressing issues being considered at the National Jobs and Skills Summit.
The Veterans Wellbeing Taskforce is committed to working together to take positive action to improve the outlook for veterans and families, ensuring they receive the services and supports they not only need, but deserve.
