Today, 294 of the Australian Defence Force’s newest officers graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Navy, Army and Air Force trainee officers took to the ADFA Parade Ground for the final time to mark the culmination of their three years at the Academy.

Minister for Defence, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, said he was proud of the trainee officers’ efforts to maintain high standards of achievement in military and university studies during what has been a difficult time for all Australians.

“Today’s parade marks the culmination of three years’ hard work across both military training and academic study,” Minister Dutton said.

“The midshipman and officer cadets graduating today have not been immune to the challenges of recent years, from bushfires to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“ADFA played an active role as part of Operation Bushfire Assist, providing respite accommodation for firefighters battling blazes in the Canberra region and southern New South Wales.

“Many of the trainee officers graduating today helped in important logistical tasks and supporting the returning firefighters.”

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, ADFA moved its education and training to an entirely online and hybrid model of delivery in line with local restrictions.

“Throughout this time, these young people were unable to visit family and friends, or to undertake many normal training activities, working and living in new ways with a great deal of commitment and ingenuity.

“Overcoming challenges, being adaptable and showing resilience in the face of adversity are the hallmarks of good leaders in the ADF,” Minister Dutton said.

“In today’s graduating class, all our future ADF leaders have shown they possess these qualities.”

Graduates will now be posted to Defence establishments around Australia to either continue their training or commence operational duties.
