- The Hon. David Littleproud MP, Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, Deputy Leader of the Nationals
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) will help storm and flood affected Victorian communities with clean up and recovery efforts.
Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud, said communities in regional Victoria were hit hard with roads still blocked by fallen trees and flood waters in many areas with loss of power compounding recovery efforts.
“Last night I approved a request from the Victorian government for ADF assistance and immediately asked Defence through Minister Dutton to support this request and begin planning,” Minister Littleproud said.
“Defence will now start mobilising up to 120 personnel to provide engineering and logistics support to clear roads and distribute essential items including generators.
“These communities need assistance now. Up to 1700 homes remain without power and the storm debris is hampering recovery efforts.
“Having Defence on the ground will support the continuing efforts of Victoria’s emergency services and help these communities recover more quickly.
Minister for Defence Peter Dutton said Defence personnel were once again putting their skills to work to support local communities recover from disasters.
“Our ADF has never been busier on home soil, helping communities time and time again, whether it be in responding to bushfires, COVID-19, floods or cyclone-ravaged areas in recovery operations, and I am thankful and proud of what they do.
“The Australian Government stands ready to assist the Victorian Government and local communities to ensure that they have all the support they need during this difficult time.”
