The Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Melbourne has strengthened military ties across Asia by participating in an International Fleet Review to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces.
Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne, said HMAS Melbourne’s participation in the Fleet Review demonstrates Australia’s commitment to the region and highlights the valued partnership between the Royal Australian Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy.
“It is a great honour to be invited to contribute to an International Fleet Review and HMAS Melbourne has represented Australia well on the international stage,” Minister Pyne said.
“HMAS Melbourne led Australia’s congratulatory wishes to the Republic of Korea on this auspicious occasion and deepened the military relationships and links we enjoy across the Indo-Pacific.
“Contributing to the Fleet Review and the surrounding activities with other nations builds on the experiences we have gained this year during Exercises Kakadu and Rim of the Pacific and lays the foundation for deeper links with international navies.
“We will continue to seek out further opportunities for maritime engagement with the Republic of Korea and other nations in support of our shared interests in regional security and stability.”
Following the successful visit to Jeju Island, HMAS Melbourne will continue her North East Asia deployment, re-joining HMA Ships Stuart and Sirius for further bilateral exercises and international engagements.
