The stories of several new recruits taking their first steps towards their dream jobs as part of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Indigenous Development Program were launched today by Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester.
Mr Chester said the Navy and Army Indigenous Development Programs (NIDP and AIDP) are important initiatives which enable new recruits to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to pursue an exciting career in the ADF.
“These new recruits will be put through their paces having a unique experience into what a career in the Australian Defence Force has to offer,” Mr Chester said.
“They will receive high quality training and education with their weekly routine including Technical and Further Education (TAFE) studies in literacy and numeracy, physical fitness, military training and cultural studies.”
Mr Chester said the program’s primary focus is to encourage and support these young men and women to reach their potential.
“These new recruits are a great example of the drive and ambition the Australian Defence Force is looking for, they are also fantastic role models for their communities who make a significant contribution to our country’s defence force capability,” Mr Chester said.
“The ADF’s indigenous development programs have seen more than 270 indigenous men and women sharpen their skills and broaden their life experiences and I hope many more will take up the challenge and see what a career in the defence force has to offer.”

Graduates will obtain a minimum of a TAFE Certificate II in Foundation Skills. They will also have the option of continuing with ADF careers or returning to civilian life with new workplace skills.
