Work to deliver modern, purpose built wholesale storage facilities on Defence land achieved a milestone today with the official opening of the Joint Logistics Unit (East) at Moorebank, New South Wales.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, the Honourable Darren Chester MP, said the Moorebank site was the first of seven being constructed under the Defence Logistics Transformation Program.

“Defence needed a quicker and better way to deliver stores and equipment to troops at the right time and the right place, by creating a modern and efficient storage, distribution and maintenance network,” Mr Chester said.

“Today’s opening of the Joint Logistics Unit (East) is the result of collaboration between Defence, industry, the Liverpool City Council and the local community.”

Joint Logistics Unit (East) was officially opened by Lieutenant General Des Mueller, AO (retired), after whom the facility has been named in honour of his significant contribution to the concept of Joint Logistics.

Commander Joint Logistics, Rear Admiral Clint Thomas, AO, CSC, said the Defence Logistics Transformation Program (DLTP) is a key reform program established to explore and realise opportunities for improvement and generate long term efficiencies in the provision of logistics support to the Australian Defence Force.

“The Defence Logistics Transformation Program provides a once in a generation opportunity to transform Defence’s logistics contracts, facilities and systems to drive efficiency,” he said.

The Joint Logistics Unit (East) at Moorebank is the largest and most complex new site in the Defence logistics network. The unit will hold around 30 million items of stock, ranging from nuts and bolts to complex aircraft components.
