Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV)
- Light armoured vehicles similar to ASLAV were first introduced into
service with the Australian Army in the early 1990s when 15 light armoured
vehicles (LAV 25s) were purchased from the United States Marine Corps.
Subsequent use and experience with these vehicles led to the development
and ultimate purchase of the ASLAV for 2 Cavalry Regiment.
- These vehicles are used for reconnaissance and surveillance activities.
They allow soldiers to more effectively detect, identify and intercept
small groups of adversaries.
- The ASLAV has a number of variants, including command and surveillance
vehicles, and its primary firepower is from a 25mm cannon. Another two
reconnaissance battalions will be equipped with the vehicle in the early
part of the next decade.
- The previously acquired vehicles will also undergo a modernisation
program to maintain a common build and standard.
- Prospects are being explored for significant levels of Australian industry
involvement.
