AWARD FOR TOBRUK RATS’ LESSONS ON DEFENCE VALUES
The Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Danna Vale, today congratulated the Department of Defence on winning the prestigious Australian Video Producer’s Association award for best documentary production. The award was presented in a ceremony held in Melbourne last night.
The winning documentary ‘Defence Values: The Siege of Tobruk’ traces the brave stance taken by Australian and allied forces to hold the strategically important Port of Tobruk in North Africa in 1941.
The documentary illustrates the harsh conditions the allied forces endured, and the huge odds they confronted in the face of a determined enemy.
Mrs Vale said the documentary was a great tribute to those who served in the Middle East during the Second World War, and would provide future generations with an accurate record of the heroic actions undertaken during this period in history.
"This winning documentary clearly illustrates how Defence’s enduring values of professionalism, loyalty, integrity, courage, innovation and teamwork were integral to the overall success at Tobruk," Mrs Vale said.
"The historical footage of Tobruk and the interviews with veterans of the siege are dramatically represented in the documentary.
"Future generations of Australians, particularly Defence personnel, who view this video will develop a much greater appreciation of the sacrifice made by our veterans," Mrs Vale said.
The documentary was produced by Defence’s Inspector General Division in cooperation with Defence Public Affairs and Corporate Communication and the Rats of Tobruk Association.
The Minister said the award recognised to the professionalism of Defence staff, particularly those involved in electronic media and video production.
"This prestigious award is a credit to the dedication and skill of its producers. I particularly welcome their creativity in producing this unique concept, and their work in partnership with Australian veterans to deliver such an important message to current and future generations of Australian Defence Force members. This video further demonstrates the wide range of exciting, challenging and award-winning careers that are available in the Australian Defence Force."
The video will be used to introduce and promote Defence values to Defence personnel.
