The Hon. Warren Snowdon MP,
Minister for Defence Science and Personnel
The Imalu Tigers from Melville
Island off the Northern Territory are getting ready for the AFL game of their
life, thanks to the support of Defence Force Recruiting.
Minister
for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon Warren Snowdon, MP, said he can’t
wait ‘til tomorrow afternoon when the Tiwi team will
play the curtain raiser for the Indigenous round at the MCG.
“Imalu won the right to play on
the hallowed turf of the MCG after taking out the Defence Jobs Cup in an
Indigenous pre-season competition in Darwin last year,” Mr
Snowdon said.
“They were unbeaten in all 7 games, and I know they will be
playing to win tomorrow as they go up against the Brambuk
Eels, which brings together the best young Indigenous players from across
Victoria.”
Both AFL and Defence play an important role in Indigenous
communities in the Northern Territory, giving young men and women fit, healthy,
focused role models who understand the value of training, commitment and
teamwork.
Mr Snowdon said NORFORCE, the
Regional Force Surveillance Unit, is already greatly respected in the
communities, but this partnership between Defence and AFL helps reach the kids
and reinforce the opportunities that a career with the Australian Defence Force
offers.
“The Army’s central values of Courage, Initiative and
Teamwork will certainly be seen on the AFL field tomorrow,” said Mr Snowdon.
“The Imalu Tigers will no doubt be
cold at first, not to mention daunted by the crowd, but they have already
proven they have the courage, initiative and teamwork to see them through.
“I congratulate the players on getting to the MCG, and I’m
really looking forward to seeing them in action,” Mr Snowdon concluded.
