TROOPS WELCOMED HOME FROM OPERATION PAKISTAN ASSIST
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon. Sandy Macdonald has today welcomed home nearly eighty Australian troops from Pakistan.
These soldiers were serving as part of Operation Pakistan Assist, Australia’s humanitarian assistance providing relief to Pakistan after an earthquake in October 2005.
"Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel have provided medical and airlift assistance to the people of Pakistan affected by this devastating earthquake," Senator Macdonald said.
"These soldiers have done Australia proud – they have saved many lives, formed valuable links with the people of Pakistan and even helped deliver three babies," he said.
Senator Macdonald said that Operation Pakistan Assist has been a great example of the ADF performing at its absolute finest.
"Australians can be proud of the efforts of all ADF personnel involved," he said.
The immediate aim of the relief effort was to provide medical assistance to people in the village of Dhanni, 20 kilometres north east of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan.
"Around 140 personnel have been involved in this deployment and I congratulate them all on this successful humanitarian aid mission," Senator Macdonald said.
Senator Macdonald welcomed home the 79 troops at the Townsville airport.
