The Australian Government has committed the transport ship HMAS Kanimbla and an Army Engineering detachment to aid in the recovery and reconstruction of communities devastated by last Sunday’s Tsunami in Indonesia.
Defence Minister Senator Robert Hill said HMAS Kanimbla will leave Sydney tomorrow carrying two Sea King helicopters and landing craft, plus additional Defence personnel.
"The ship will travel via Darwin to pick up an Army engineering squadron comprising around 100 personnel with heavy equipment essential to the clean-up and reconstruction efforts in Aceh," Senator Hill said.
"It is yet to be determined whether or not Kanimbla will be able to use damaged port facilities in Aceh, especially Banda Aceh, however the key action at present is to get the ship into the area.
"Once on station, Kanimbla is capable of providing a range of support facilities including medical, accommodation and communications.
HMAS Kanimbla will be able to remain on station for around 30 days before the vessel will require resupply.
HMAS Kanimbla adds to the previously announced support from the ADF which includes four C-130 Hercules and a B707 transport aircraft, medical personnel and a range of essential support personnel.
Over 100 ADF personnel are now working in and around Aceh with around 600 providing support for the operation from Australia.
The ADF continues to work with Indonesian authorities in assessing the best way to utilise the personnel and assets provided by Australia to ensure they are used effectively.
