Two Australian Defence Force C130 Hercules that have flown to Medan in Sumatra will be used to carry humanitarian supplies into Banda, Aceh along with a medical team and a UN assessment team, Defence Minister Robert Hill said today.
Two further C130s will arrive in Medan later today, bringing the total to four Australian RAAF C130s. These aircraft will be joined by a New Zealand Air Force Hercules and will operate from a forward base in Medan.
"After delivering stores to Aceh, the C130s will then be used to shuttle stores, equipment and personnel within Indonesia as requested by Indonesian authorities," Senator Hill said.
"We will also be forwarding a further 60 tonnes of humanitarian aid and specific items such as generators, as requested by the Indonesians. They will be transported by a commercially chartered aircraft, which will leave Australia today to meet up with our C130s.
"A further two civilian medical teams are to be transported to the region by an RAAF 707, which will leave today.
"We will continue to monitor and respond to needs in the region as they arise."
