$64.2 million raaf base tindal Airborne Early Warning and Control Facilities in northern territory given go ahead by parliament

 

Minister for Defence, the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon MP, and Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, announced the proposed construction of new facilities for Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft at RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory.

 

“The new aircraft will be an integral part of the Australian Defence Force’s air defence system.  It will significantly enhance Australia’s surveillance, air defence, fleet support and joint operations,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

 

The Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Public works has recommended the $64.2 million proposal proceed and this recommendation has been approved by Parliament.

 

“The proposed project will include new taxiways, aprons, shelters, and refuelling infrastructure to enable the aircraft to operate effectively from the base,” Dr Kelly said.

 

Construction is planned to commence in early 2009 and be completed in late 2010.
