DEFENCE DOCUMENTARY WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

Two international awards have been bestowed upon a Department of Defence documentary by the United States International Film and Video Festival.

The documentary Defence Values: The Siege of Tobruk received high acclaim from the festival judges, winning the Silver Screen Award for second place in the motivational/inspirational category and third place for creative excellence in the documentary category.

The documentary traces the brave stance taken by Australian forces to hold the strategically important Port of Tobruk in North Africa in 1941 and more than 1500 entries from 27 countries were judged.

"The documentary is a great tribute to those who served during the siege and provides future generations with an accurate record of their heroic action," said the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Mal Brough.

Mr Brough said the documentary, created in partnership with Australian veterans, would help to deliver important messages to current and future Australian Defence Force personnel.

"The documentary was produced to illustrate how the enduring values of professionalism, loyalty, integrity, courage, innovation and teamwork – integral to the overall success at Tobruk – are still critical to the success of the Australian Defence Force," Mr Brough said.

Historical footage of Tobruk and interviews with veterans of the siege are dramatically represented in the documentary, which also illustrates the harsh conditions that allied forces endured and the huge odds they confronted in the face of a determined enemy.

Defence Values: The Siege of Tobruk was produced by Defence’s Inspector General Group in cooperation with Defence Digital Media and the Rats of Tobruk Association. The Australian War Memorial and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs also provided valuable assistance.

The awards will be received from the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles on 12 June, 2004.
