Parliamentary Secretary for Defence – Ipswich youth prepare for Anzac Day

The 127 Army Cadet Unit in Ipswich last night received a visit from Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Senator David Feeney and local MP Shayne Neumann as they practice drill in preparation for Anzac Day.

“It is tremendous to see young people actively participating in the community by supporting commemorative events such as Anzac Day and Vietnam Veterans Day,” Senator Feeney said.

“While the 127 Army Cadet Unit is supported by the Australian Army through the 1st Regiment Royal Australian Artillery, it is a volunteer and community-based unit and I look forward to meeting the staff who offer their time.”

Mr Neumann noted the support the local community puts into the Cadet organisation.

“The Ipswich City Council, the local RSL and local business provide ongoing support to the unit,” Mr Neumann said.

“I thank the Ipswich community and these organisations for their valuable service to the youth of Australia.”

For Anzac Day, the unit will be supporting the Goodna RSL through a company sized parade. 127 Army Cadet Unit will also have a catafalque party in support of the Bundamba Memorial Service.

Army Cadet activities are designed to empower youth to achieve their potential by developing initiative, teamwork skills and a sense of community responsibility and service.

Cadets undertake weekly parade nights at their home unit, and also have the chance to undertake a range of weekend and school holiday activities, including first aid, navigation, leadership courses and adventure training.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers, friends and family who have consistently and tirelessly stood behind the Cadet organisation and Cadets themselves. Without the support of the community, Australian Army Cadets would not be the excellent youth organisation that it is today,” Senator Feeney said.

“The Government is planning for an enhanced future for Cadets. This Government understands the importance of the organisation in the Australian psyche and we will continue to plan for a great generation of future leaders,” he said.

“It is a youth development program that provides young Australians with a unique military experience and embodies strong values, such as honour, honesty, integrity, courage, loyalty, teamwork and citizenship.”
