Minister for Defence Science and Personnel Warren Snowdon today announced more than 200 houses on RAAF Base Darwin have been sold and will be available for purchase to the public.
“Northern Transportables Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract and will be working with Defence and Defence Housing Australia (DHA) to remove 221 vacant houses from the base,” Mr Snowdon said.
“Work on the relocation will start in April with the majority of the houses requiring upgrades to meet government standards before they can be sold.”
The Eaton area will remain home to Defence families, with 100 extra houses to be constructed in 2015.
“This area remains a critical and strategic parcel of defence land and any suggestion it is open to civilian accommodation remains completely inappropriate,” Mr Snowdon said.
“The 100 new houses are in addition to DHA investing in new projects to house Defence families at Larrakeyah – unveiling 97 high set houses in February and when complete, 329 new houses at the Breezes development in Muirhead.”
“This also represents a significant boost to the Territory economy by creating local jobs during the construction of these projects,” Mr Snowdon said.
Details of the individual houses will be made available on the Northern Transportables website, with the houses available for purchase by individuals or organisations.
