Parliamentary Secretary for Defence – Victorian cadets win Chief of Air Force Trophy

More than 1,000 Australian Air Force cadets and staff from around the country have today converged on Point Cook for the annual Air Force Trophy parade.

This year’s winners of the Air Force Trophy are the Victorian based Number 4 Wing.

Each year the Air Force Trophy is awarded to the most proficient Australian Air Force Cadet Wing.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, attended the parade on behalf of the Prime Minister and took the opportunity to personally congratulate the cadets on their achievement.

“As I look around me today at the wonderful young people on parade, the benefits of an organisation such as the Australian Air Force Cadets is clear,” Senator Feeney said.

“You are an impressive group of young people, and should be justly proud of your achievement today.”

Senator Feeney also noted the important role of community within the organisation.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers, friends and family who have consistently and tirelessly stood behind the cadet organisation and cadets themselves. Without the support of the community, Australian Air Force Cadets would not be the excellent youth organisation that it is today,” he said.

Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Gavin Davies, presented the award on behalf of Air Force.

“This award is a magnificent achievement for Number 4 Wing and represents a year of hard work and discipline from both staff and cadets,” Air Vice-Marshal Davies said.

“To all of you, and the countless family and friends who have supported you throughout the year, congratulations and well done.”

Wing Commander (AAFC) Elizabeth Flanagan, the first female Officer Commanding in the Australian Air Force Cadets, accepted the award on behalf of Number 4 Wing.

“I am so proud of the efforts and professionalism of all our staff and cadets. Thank you all for your hard work. This award could only be achieved as a one team effort,” she said.

The Australian Air Force Cadets is a community-based youth development organisation open to all young Australians. The organisation seeks to stimulate young Australians’ interests in both the Air Force and aviation in general whilst providing them with the opportunity to develop their personal and team qualities within a military setting.

“The Government is planning for an enhanced future for Cadets. This Government understands the importance of the organisation in the Australian psyche and we will continue to plan for a great generation of future leaders,” said Senator Feeney.

“It is a youth development program that provides young Australians with a unique military experience and embodies strong values, such as honour, honesty, integrity, courage, loyalty, teamwork and citizenship.”
