Minister for Defence Materiel – Minister meets with Commandos

Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today visited Holsworthy Army Barracks to meet with soldiers from the 2nd Commando Regiment.

The Commando Regiment is part of Special Operations Command.

While at the Barracks, Mr Clare was briefed on the unit capability and the current role of the Commandos in Afghanistan.

Mr Clare was also given a tour of the Special Forces Training Facility.

“2nd Commando is the largest combat unit in the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Clare said.

“The Regiment’s job is to deter, deny and defeat threats at short notice with surgical precision within complex social and physical terrain.

“They do important and dangerous work in Afghanistan and here in Australia.

“In Afghanistan they have done a lot of the heavy fighting and lost eight soldiers – more than any other Regiment in the Australian Army.

“In Australia their job is to work with Police to respond to emergencies and conduct counter-terrorism operations.

“My job is to make sure they have the equipment they need to get the job done.

“This was a good opportunity to talk to the troops and thank them for the work they do and the sacrifices they have made for us.”
